Line and area charts are the best fit when you want to show how a metric changes over time - sessions per day, spend per week, conversions per month.
Line charts emphasise the trend itself; area charts fill the space below the line, which makes volume easier to read at a glance. Both widgets share the same setup steps and settings.
How to add a line or area chart
Step 1. Open your report, and from the right-side panel, select "Widgets" and drag the Line chart or Area chart onto the report grid.
Step 2. Resize the widget by hovering over its edge and dragging it to the size you want. A taller widget gives you more vertical space for the trend; a wider one shows more data points across the X-axis.
Step 3. Click the widget to open its settings on the right. In the Data drawer, click the metric field to pick the metric you want to see (e.g., Sessions, Clicks, Spend).
You can add more than one metric - each appears as its own line or area on the chart.
Note: If your chart shows "-" or a flat line, check that the source is active and that your date range falls within the data the integration returns.
Step 4. Set the dimension to a time-based one (Day, Week, Month) so the X-axis shows the date progression. Line and area charts always need a time dimension to work properly.
Note: Line and area charts work with a single dimension only. If you want to compare a metric across campaigns, channels, or devices, use a bar chart or a table instead.
π Your chart is ready. From here, you can fine-tune it using the settings below.
Useful widget settings for line and area charts
Open the Settings drawer on the right-hand panel to access these.
Data grouping - buckets data points along the X-axis. Choose Auto, Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly, or Yearly. Use weekly or monthly to smooth out noisy daily data.
Display labels on charts - shows the value at each data point, with options for position, rotation, size, and distance.
Comparison - overlays the previous period so you can see this week vs. last week, or this month vs. the same month last year.
Colors and footer - adjust line/area colours and toggle the footer.
Metric settings
Click the widget, choose one of the metrics, then open the Settings drawer in the right-hand panel.
Cumulative data - switches the chart to a running total instead of period-by-period values.
Trend line - fits a trend on top of the data. Available in Linear, Exponential, Polynomial, and Moving Average.
Chart type - changes how the metric looks visually. Switch between Area, Column, or Line.
