How to Set Up and Apply Custom Metrics

Learn how to create your very own custom metric using the Organize feature

What Are Custom Metrics?

"Organize" allows you to create your very own custom metrics, which can be used inside your Whatagraph reports to make the metric names consistent. This article will take you through the setup process and explain every step of the way.

You will find the "Organize" space on the top navigation bar in our legacy UI:

How to Create a Custom Metrics (old UI)

1. Navigate to the "Organize" space in the top navigational bar:

2. Select 'Create new metric' under the '+ Create new' button:

3. Set up the name for your dimension:

  • Display name - this is the name your custom dimension will be reflected with in the reporting environment when setting up your widgets;

  • Description - this can act as your internal reference to explain the purpose behind the metric rule.



4. Select the rule type:

  • Unify names - this rule type allows you to select multiple metrics from different sources or channels and give them a consistent unified name (e.g. the same dimension is called differently across different channels Device for Google Ads & Device Platform for Facebook Ads, so you can name both of them Device;

  • Formula - which allows to create formulas between various metrics
    ​


5. Select the rule level:

  • Channel level - this rule level would make the custom metrics visible across all selected channels in your account. This is relevant for cases where you want to apply rules to update all sources related to specific channels at once (e.g. you create a rule which includes Google Ads & you have 15 Google Ads sources connected. You can use the rule in every single report containing any of the 15 sources);

  • Source level - this rule level would make the custom metrics visible only for specific data sources. This is relevant where some of your clients have specific needs (e.g. I have 15 Google Ads accounts but selected just one. The dimension will not be available for the remaining 14 Google Ads sources).

6. Create the rule:

You will have to specify the channels (or sources) that you want to select for creating your custom metrics on the left and indicate what metrics you wish to unify. So in this instance, Engaged sessions and Engaged users from two separate integrations will now be reflected as Unique Engagements, universally.

7. Apply it to widgets inside the reports

Once the rule is created, just add a new metric to any widgets that belong to GA4 or Facebook Page (or any other channels that you chose previously) widget setup like you normally would.

After clicking 'Add new' you will see "Organized metrics" tabs. The custom tab will include all dimensions organizing rules set by anyone on your team, and pre-made will include the ones already prepared by Whatagraph.
